Now you’re probably asking, what am I supposed to do with all this information?
Golden Cheetah is an analytic software that lets you get the value out of all your data.
This post provides a quick and easy breakdown of what Golden Cheetah is and what you can gain from using this software to analyze your training.
What is Golden Cheetah?
Golden Cheetah is a free, open source analytic software for endurance athletes. It is highly geared towards cyclists and triathletes looking to dive deeper into the world of training analytics to get the most out of their power device.
Being an open source software, developers are continuously working and improving Golden Cheetah. Both older releases and development versions of the desktop software can be downloaded from the Golden Cheetah website. Golden Cheetah is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. The full source code is available on Github.
Golden Cheetah is compatible with all popular file formats and devices, allowing for fast, easy data imports. With their cloud integration it is easy to share data to the most popular training applications such as Strava, Selfloops, Cycling Analytics, and Today’s Plan.
If you’re a self-proclaimed data-junkie and want to get more out of analytics, Golden Cheetah is the software for you!
Golden Cheetah Features
The PMC chart tracks fitness, form and fatigue and can be customized with metrics such as BikeScore (based on power), TriScore, and TRIMP (based on HR).
The CP chart displays power bests and allows athletes to compare activities or intervals to thier bests across selected date ranges. Golden Cheetah also has built-in modelling that uses imported data to estimate FTP and then tracks estimated vs. actual power over time.
The Stress chart displays the W’bal plot where you can track trends in W’bal between intervals, activities, or season’s.
Golden Cheetah allows you to create multiple athlete profiles. Athlete data can be analyzed individually or you can easily compare intervals, activities, or date ranges between athletes, by dragging and dropping activities into the compare pane.
The workout builder allows users to completely customize pre-programmed workouts to fit your physiology or build your own from scratch. Then, watch your progress, CP and W’bal in real time as you complete the workout!
Golden Cheetah has an advanced data editor with features that other programs don’t provide. A few features include anomaly detection, fixing power spikes, and finding intervals.
Using the Aerolab feature, you can test out how aerodynamic one bike setup is compared to another to maximize your performance on race day.
User Defined Metrics
Golden Cheetah allows you to define custom equations and training metrics that are computed from ride data. These can then be used the same way built-in metrics are used.
The only area Golden Cheetah is lacking, is in its planning abilities including components such as build, taper and peak periods. Golden Cheetah is the most beneficial when used in combination with another training application to get the full picture of past, present and future training.
